What are your favorite parenting books?

Because I had four children in just over five years, I ironically never had a lot of time to read parenting books. But I do have my favorites, including the sensible yet compassionate Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five by Dr. Penelope Leach.

Another favorite is The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness: Five Steps to Help Kids Create and Sustain Lifelong Joy by Dr. Edward M. Hallowell. What I love about this book is that it emphasizes the importance of feeling connected–to your family, your community, your friends–and how activities such as chores, team sports, and community service can foster a child’s sense of mastery.

Most of all, Hallowell is a huge proponent of the kind of leisurely, unstructured play that is sadly disappearing from our culture.

I would love for this blog to become a place where parents and grandparents can share resources with each other. So please feel free to post about your favorite parenting books and why they have been important to you.
